MENTORSHIP

2018, 2019, 2020, & 2021. Mentored three Graduate students from Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy as a teaching assistant in my CNUR 209 research class

Research assistant – Dr. Alberta Baffour-Awuah on research project “Older Adults’ Living Environments: Do they Promote Healthy Aging during Pandemic”. I am providing mentorship on qualitative data analysis, manuscript preparation, and presentation of findings in community workshop.

Practicum student and research associate- Jordan Pierson on SSHRC funded research project “Strengthening the Social Capital of Older Black Adults in Canada in the Era of COVID-19”. I am providing mentorship on qualitative data analysis, manuscript preparation, and presentation of findings in community workshop.

Since January 2024, I have been co-supervising three Special Case PhD Students from the University of Regina Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (Eunice Abudu, Matilda Anim-Larbi, and Jose Diego Marques Santos) and solely supervising one Masters in Aging Studies Student ( Jordan Lee Pierson). Two of the PhD students, Eunice Abudu and Matilda Anim Larbi have successfully completed their candidacy examination in February and April 2026 respectfully.

May 2017- to date I have supervised Nursing Undergraduate Research Internship Program (NURIP) (Student, Ashley Ho) who has become my research assistant on the international project. I am also mentoring another NURIP student Wisdom Atulaegwu who has successfully written a proposal for Faculty of Nursing grant, obtained ethics approval, gathered data and submitted an abstract for an oral presentation at International Council of Nursing (ICN) 2025 conference in Finland. Through these mentorships with the students, we have completed research projects and published peer reviewed manuscripts with them.

In addition, with my colleague Dr. Sithokozile Maposa, from the College of Nursing, University of Saskatchewan, we have guided Eunice Abudu and Matilda Anim Larbi as co-supervisors to complete their PhD comprehensive written and oral defense. The students are about to apply for ethics approval to commence their research.

Furthermore, I have mentored my two PhD students to complete both external and internal grant applications. The mentorship involved providing guidance and reading through grant proposals and writing reference letters for the grants.

I have engaged in many activities at the Faculty of Nursing, University of Regina, the campus at large, Saskatchewan community, and beyond since my employment in 2016 at the University. For example, I have been a member of the University of Regina Grievance Committee since 2022; member of Faculty of Nursing Doctoral Conference Planning Committee ; member of the Abstract Reviewing Committee 2024, 2025, 2026 for Saskatchewan Seniors Mechanism Celebrating Seniors Award; Board Member at the Saskatoon Council on Aging f, from 2022 to June 2024, and Board member, Victoria Avenue SDA Church , 2016 to 2023. Examples of my role on some of these boards such as Saskatoon Council on Aging (SCOA) include volunteering at some hub club meetings where I provide education on healthy life style and attending monthly board meetings to contribute to decisions to steer the organization’s activities on issues relevant to promoting the wellbeing of older adults. Apart from older adults’ organizations, I have also been actively engaged with immigrant and settlement organizations such as Saskatoon Open Door Society (SODS) and Edmonton Immigrant Services Association (EISA) on my research to promote the well-being and aging in place of diverse groups of older adults in Saskatchewan and Alberta through programs that promote their social connection and sense of belongingness. I am also involved in multidisciplinary older adult research teams across Canada and internationally to research diverse topics including housing and social determinants of health. I shared the findings of my research with older adult groups in Saskatchewan such as Wolf Willow Cohousing, Prairie Spruce Cohousing community dwelling older adults in Saskatoon and Regina, assisted living facilities such as Luther Care Communities, collaborators on the projects such as SCOA, SODS, and EISA. I am also a co-founder and board member of the People of African Descent Seniors Association (PADSA) in Saskatchewan to promote the social inclusion and wellbeing of older Black adults in Saskatchewan and beyond.
